Local nonprofits can apply for funding through Gannett Foundation's A Community Thrives
The IU School of Dentistry’s student outreach clinic has received a $100,000 grant from Gannett’s A Community Thrives program.
Indianapolis-area nonprofits stepped up to help the community over the last year through the challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
A $2.3 million initiative through the Gannett Foundation can provide financial assistance to Indy-area organizations that are continuing to do important work more than a year later.
Local nonprofits have the opportunity to apply for grant funding through A Community Thrives, the USA Today Network’s grantmaking and crowdfunding program, now in its fifth year.
Through June 30, eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations can apply to participate in A Community Thrives. Applications can be completed at act.usatoday.com.

After the application process, organizations can fundraise and compete for grants from July 19 through August 13.
“This program is another extension of our mission to help our community flourish and to serve others,” IndyStar Executive Editor Katrice Hardy said. “We saw so many in need particularly this past year during the pandemic. I look forward to announcing the worthy non-profits who will benefit from the grants and more importantly, am eager to learn just how many people who live among us who will receive help from this ongoing and annual initiative.”
In 2020, several Indy-area nonprofits were recipients of A Community Thrives grants.
St. Mary’s Child Center, a program for pre-school children, received $10,000. Second Helpings, Inc., a hunger relief agency, received $12,000.
IndyStar and the USA Today Network granted more than $90,000 to local organizations through A Community Thrives in 2019.
