Hamilton County is getting its first wholesale retail club.

BJ’s Wholesale Club has proposed a 104,458-square-foot building on 12.28 acres on Tegler Drive in Noblesville’s Hamilton Town Center. The Noblesville location will be BJ’s Wholesale’s first in Indiana, and  a completion date is not yet known.

Based in Westborough, Massachusetts, the company has locations up and down the East Coast, in the Southeast as well as Michigan and Ohio. The club sells groceries, general merchandise and gas.

Caleb Gutshall, Noblesville planning and development department director, said the city is excited for BJ’s to come to Noblesville where it will provide another grocery option for residents. Gutshall said Noblesville did not offer BJ’s tax abatements or incentives to choose the city.

“I have spoken with several people that are familiar with their East Coast and Southeast locations and are thrilled by the prospect of having a location so close to home, which speaks to the quality and unique experience the company provides,” Gutshall wrote via email.

BJ’s Wholesale could not be reached for comment.

Its biggest competitors are Costco and Sam’s Club. The closest Costco to Noblesville is near Castleton Square Mall on East 86th Street and the closest Sam’s Club is on East 96th Street, also in the Castleton area.

BJ’s current standard membership fee is $55, Costco’s is $60 and Sam’s Club’s is $45.

Gutshall said the project will not go through the plan commission and therefore will not receive a public hearing unless the company seeks a waiver from the city’s design standards.

Plans are subject to change after the company addresses Noblesville’s Technical Advisory Committee’s comments from a May 20 meeting. He said the project will move forward on the company’s own timeline after they respond to the committee’s requests.
