15 Best Sun Hats for Hot Summer Days (2021)

Whether you’re hanging out in your backyard, safely social distancing at the beach, or heading on that first post-vax vacation, sun protection shouldn’t end at your preferred brand of sunscreen. From packable straw hats that won’t get crushed in your beach bag to baseball caps from our favorite hotels and restaurants to our hat of choice this summer, the bold-print bucket, there are plenty of sun protecting hats that will look good on the sand—and save your skin when you’ve slathered on the last drop of SPF 40. Below, a few of the best fashion-forward sun hats we’ll be sporting for summer 2021 and beyond.

Straw hats

Lack of Color boater

Australian brand Lack of Color’s hats are popular for a reason. Handmade by artisans in Mexico using baked palm leafs, each piece has a structured silhouette, and beautiful little details (on this boater, a thin upturned edge and waxed cotton chin strap with wooden beads).

Janessa Leone Felix hat

Who says you have to choose between a straw style and bucket shape? This crushable Janessa Leone number will keep the sun out of your eyes better than most lids, while effortlessly sprucing up your go-to summer linen looks.

J. Crew. packable straw hat

You’ll never need to worry about a crushed brim again thanks to this unisex hat, whose ultra-chic, lightweight design—made with resilient, shapeable raffia straw—easily pairs with any outfit in your summer wardrobe.

Bucket hats

Cotton crusher hat

This sporty bucket hat is like the jeans in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants—anyone can pull it off, and comfortably. We love the slouchy, oversize rim, which makes it ideal for any sunny situation—hanging at the beach, rafting, camping, hiking, or exploring a new city.

Ganni seersucker bucket hat

Made from organic cotton and recycled polyester, this bucket hat is easy to pack and effortlessly chic, with a summery seersucker design that keeps things playful. The wider brim shields your face from the sun and the striped pattern pairs well with most laid-back, beachy outfits.

Holiday the Label bucket hat

If your 2021 summer look is all about splashy colors, meet your must-have bucket hat. From Australia-based (and Insta-famous) Holiday the Label, known for their bright, printed pants and pajamas, comes this psychedelic bucket hat that’ll make you friends wherever you wear it.

Wide-brim sun hats

Boswell Tubu crushable hat

From yet another shop down under, the Tubu from Aussie brand Boswell is your next-level packable hat. Unlike most crushable toppers, this hat isn’t straw; instead, it’s made from a soft fabric that can be molded when worn (say, with a stays-put flipped up rim). If you find hats hard to shop for, take them up on having yours custom-sized.

Romualda Calacatta Gigante hat

If you’re in the “bolder the better” fashion camp for this summer (frankly, who isn’t?), this hand-painted number from Spanish brand Romualda will have you covered—quite literally. With a nearly 15-inch brim, the reversible and moldable hat will protect like no other, but good luck making it from your hotel room to the pool without half-a-dozen people stopping to ask you where you got it.

Baggu packable sun hat

Just in time for summer, our beloved Baggu has come through with hats. Their packable sun hat, which we’d describe as a pop-up sunshade for your head, is made of 100 percent organic cotton in a range of desert tones—think sandy neutral, poppy orange, and a sunrise lilac. While the adjustable headband and chin straps are great touches, our favorite feature is that it packs into its own carrying pouch, barely larger than a CD (remember those?).

Baseball hats

Los Angeles Dodgers hat

A Los Angeles Dodgers hat (much like its counterpart, the New York Yankees cap) is an easy way to show your coastal loyalty, regardless of your affinity for sports. We always love the classic City of Angels blue, but you can broaden your collection with harder-to-find hues, like this purple.

Lululemon Fast and Free run hat

For runners, tennis players, and anyone who needs their hair off their face for a bit, this wide-back run hat is designed to please. A larger hole in the back makes it easy to fit more hair through the cap (or wear a higher ponytail or bun), and sweat-wicking material promises plenty of airflow.

Cervo’s cap

Everyone knows that the best baseball caps are those with a favorite hotel, bar, or restaurant’s name emblazoned across the front—not only because it’s the easiest way to tell people what you’re all about, but also because merch is an easy way to support local businesses. One of our go-tos is this rosy pink cap from New York City’s Cervo’s—their seafood-forward menu always reminds us of hazy summer nights.

Tie-dye baseball cap

Like bucket hats, the ’90s throwback look of tie-dye is high on our summer vibe list. This adjustable cotton hat from Anthropologie, which comes in bright yellow or pink, is a subtle way to work the look into your wardrobe, with a faded print that promises to go with everything.

Yosuzi hat

This palm straw visor will give you added protection from the sun’s harmful rays thanks to an extra-wide brim that wraps all the way around. It offers the same level of shade as a floppy straw hat in an easy, rollable shape; plus, its construction and hand-woven tapestry inlay, done over two full days by artisans in Venezuela, make it a work of art.

Pineapple & Star Vienna visor

For an elevated look at an affordable price point, this Amazon visor gets top reviews (it has a nearly-perfect 4.6 out of five stars). A hook and loop closure at the back will keep it secure, but a dainty satin bow adds to the look. Plus, you can roll it up and shove it into your beach bag without worrying about creases—this visor is designed to be packable.
