Arts & Culture Southwest Indiana takes pride in its arts community. The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana serves as a cornerstone, promoting cultural events, including a week-long arts festival, and dispersing valuable information. The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, now in its 77th season, presents the finest in live symphonic entertainment for the Tri-State. The Philharmonic is celebrating its 20th season under the direction of Maestro Alfred Savia. The Evansville Civic Theatre, in its 85th season, dazzles audiences with local productions featuring musical reviews, comedies, and drama. The Evansville Children's Theatre, a volunteer organization, presents family entertainment such as touring productions, plays, and storytelling programs. Aspiring ballerinas can receive instruction and showcase their talents at the Evansville Dance Theatre and School, or Ballet Evansville, which holds three annual performances. Evansville's own Tales & Scales is a group of storytelling musicians that tours nationally-acclaimed performances and workshops that ignite the imaginations of young audiences in schools, libraries and community centers throughout Southwest Indiana and beyond! |
Created as a experimental Utopian society in the early 1800s, New Harmony has become an artists haven. Nestled in Posey County, New Harmony features many architectural splendors. Perhaps the grandest spiritual tribute in New Harmony is the Cathedral Labyrinth and Sacred Garden, estimated to be the most beautiful in the country, and blessed by Canon Francois Legaux, Rector of Chartres Cathedral. Carnelian granite has been intricately honed and masterfully assembled into an exact replica of the 12th century labyrinth at Chartres.
