I-69 Information
The Interstate 69 extension from Evansville to Indianapolis is the top
legislative priority of the Chamber of Commerce and our organization is
committed to its final completion. As the most important economic
development investment of our lifetime, the I-69 extension will bring
new jobs and development to southwest Indiana.
Over the past decade, primary advocacy for completing I-69 from
Indianapolis to Evansville originated from individuals and organizations
in Southwestern Indiana. The Southwestern Indiana Regional Highway
Coalition was incorporated in 1991 and maintained a 501(c) 6 tax status.
The organization, which was later called “Voices for I-69” and was
instrumental in establishing an extensive grassroots network throughout
the region and spearheaded intense public support, which led to the
federal approval of the Record of Decision.
In 2004, “Voices” evolved into the “Hoosier Voices for I-69” coalition,
which worked to bring a statewide focus to the I-69 project. During the
past legislative session, “Hoosier Voices” was instrumental in the
effort to build support for passage of Governor Mitch Daniel’s “Major
Moves for Indiana” transportation plan. As a result of “Major Moves,”
the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is accelerating the
I-69 project to begin construction in 2008, with expected completion in
2018.
