The center of the U.S. population is edging closer to Evansville all the time. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the median center in 2007 is just north of Interstate 64 and east of U.S. 41, about 70 miles north of Evansville in neighboring Gibson County, Ind. The population center is figured by an intersection of two median lines: A north-south line where half the nation’s population lives north and south of it.

For Southwest Indiana, being at the median population point of the country can be a powerful economic tool for attracting new industries - especially with its easy distribution access to all points in the United States.
